Printable Biography:
Dr. Thomas Hoag grew up in a military household, traveling the United States and the world to include California, Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, Florida, Arizona, Washington, Germany and Israel. It is because of this background that Dr. Hoag has a special interest in, and an affinity for, the families of the Armed Services, those of the Foreign Service and those originally from foreign lands.
Dr. Hoag earned his undergraduate degree, receiving top honors, in International Relations from Brigham Young University. He pursued his MBA at the University of California at Berkeley, one of the nation’s top 10 MBA schools in California, in 1987, where he graduated top of his class. He was a finance manager at Hewlett Packard prior to pursuing a career in medicine. Dr. Hoag completed his Doctor of Osteopathy at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, Missouri in 1995, graduating in the top 10 percent of his class. He completed a Family Practice Internship at Stanislaus Medical Center, Modesto, California, and served as Head Resident for two consecutive years in the Family Practice Residency at John C. Lincoln Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona until 1998. Dr. Hoag is board certified in the specialty of Family Medicine, and recently scored in the 95th percentile on his national boards.
Dr. Hoag first practiced in private practice in Queen Creek, Arizona, where he was one of two doctors in a small town located in the middle of the desert, treating everyone from the wealthy to poor migrant workers who spoke little to no English. He has been practicing in the Williamsburg area since 2005, and partnered with Glenn T. Rauchwarg, D.O. and Eileen Vernon, NP-C, joining TPMG and the opening of Discovery Park Family Medicine in the New Town area of Williamsburg on October 1, 2014.
Dr. Hoag sincerely cares about his patients and enjoys working with a full spectrum of medical concerns from newborns to geriatrics. In 1993, during his medical training, Dr. Hoag’s mother passed away after years of battling ovarian and breast cancer. Seeing her challenges first hand cemented his desire to help other people through all types of struggles and concerns.
Dr. Hoag enjoys watching old Cary Grant movies and Louis L’Amour westerns. He has been married for over 29 years to the woman of his dreams and has six children. Together, they enjoy traveling, learning about new places, boogey-boarding, snorkeling, skiing, tennis and simply playing silly family games. As a family, they flew to the Kingdom of Tonga in the South Pacific to serve as volunteers on a medical mission, and also volunteer their time together at the local homeless shelters. His wife and children are the highlights of his life.
