Since 2009, Dr. P. Marlene Capps has been offering medical management services to patients with weight concerns. A franchise operation of a nationally recognized weight loss clinic, the Center for Medical Weight Loss is able to offer patients a personalized body analysis with a wide variety of meal planning options, scientific nutritional education, behavioral counseling and medical insight into health status and conditions impacting weight gain. Patients are able to self refer, or physicians may suggest a consultation. Only medical weight loss services are provided, with program updates and summary letters going back to the patient’s primary care physician. Specialty physicians may also find obesity management helpful in treating joint pain, sleep apnea, GERD, diabetes, and patients with hypertensive or other co-morbid conditions negatively affected by weight.

The program is a licensed site following a program designed by Dr. Michael Kaplan, a New York internist who despaired of simply continually advising patients to lose weight. Full or partial meal replacement programs using high quality nutraceuticals are combined with directed exercise advice, and behavioral therapy as a built-in component to each follow up visit to address often overlooked psychosocial behavioral aspects of overeating. The partnership with physical therapy allows the a la carte provision of personal training services, massage, and dietician consultations. Patients can also receive training as they transition back to a regular diet. If this sounds like medicine catching up with the commercial programs in the current market you are right!

The premise of the program is that obesity is, and should be managed, as a lifelong medical illness just like hypertension or diabetes. That it is best and more safely managed by medical doctors who can supervise and be alert for complications, increasing the number of patients who can be served with very low calorie diet therapy. Diabetic and cardiac patients can safely participate. Patients are encouraged to develop new skills but return immediately if they begin to see weight regain.

Obesity is an epidemic and a pandemic

  • Responsible for over 300,000 deaths every year
  • Second only to smoking for deaths as most preventable cause of death in the U.S.
  • 64% of American adults are overweight or obese
  • Obesity rates have tripled over the last 30 years

Currently, the programs fall outside of most insurance coverage, but interest-free financing through Care Credit is available for patients who qualify. Certainly, there are many good weight loss programs available, and there is no shortage of patients who could benefit from a serious weight loss program. Dr. Capps would be happy to help with your patients who would like a degree of difference-a medical degree! Call 1-877-454-0520 for more information, and to schedule an appointment.
